Purgatory

Question: When I was a child I used to read the Bible and I noticed that there is no word Purgatory written. What you can find is the word Hell or lake of fire or eternal fire.I just want to know how we, the Catholics, get the idea of Purgatory. Although I believe that there is really Purgatory, I find it hard to defend or explain it.Please help me understand.Thank you
